Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the date in which it takes place varies from February to March, depending on the year. It combines different elements, as parades, costumes and street parties. By extension, similar parties that take place in other times of the year are also called carnival. Even though the way of celebrating it is different in each country, there is a common feature to all, disarray and permissiveness. Uruguayan carnival is known for being the one with the longest length.  

El carnaval es una celebración que tiene lugar inmediatamente antes de la cuaresma cristiana, con fecha variable (entre febrero y marzo según el año); que combina algunos elementos como disfraces, desfiles, y fiestas en la calle. Por extensión se llaman así, algunas fiestas similares en cualquier época del año. A pesar de las grandes diferencias que dicha celebración tiene en el mundo, la característica común a todas es la de ser un período de permisividad y descontrol. El Carnaval de Uruguay se caracteriza por ser el mas largo.
