Uruguayan Post's First Stamp
The stamp "Diligencia" (Stagecoach) with a face value of 60 cents was the first Uruguayan postal stamp and appeared the 1st October 1856.
The whole world had been using stamps for 16 years when Uruguay started doing it. It was named "Stagecoach" because these stamps were used for franking mail that was sent through that means of transport.
The stamps were lithographed by Lucian Mége, in Montevideo, over white paper, in sheets of 35 imperforate stamps. Each sheet consisted of 7 horizontal lines of 5 stamps each. The size was of 18,5 per 22 mm.
The stamp displayed a sun, the image was taken from the State's Coat of Arms, which was in force from 1824 till 1906. This first issue consisted of 3 values: 60 cents, blue; 80 cents, green; and 1 penny, burgundy.
Subsequently two more were issued, one of 180 cents and another of 240 cents, but these were not put into circulation (they were not used for franking) because the stamps' displayed the word "Stagecoach" and the means of transport used to transport mail from one shore of Río de la Plata to the other was fluvial.
Although the design was simple and that in those times there was a lack of modern means to print them, the "Stagecoach" stamps possess unique beauty and stamp collectors all over the world are interested in them.
Primer Sello de Correos en Uruguay
El sello "Diligencia" de 60 centavos es el primer timbre postal uruguayo y aparece el 1º de Octubre de 1856.
Hacía dieciséis años que circulaban sellos postales por el mundo cuando el Uruguay se incorporó a la lista de países que contaban con tan práctico elemento. El nombre "Diligencia" se debe a que estaba destinado a franquear la correspondencia transportada por este medio.
Fueron litografiados por Lucian Mége, en Montevideo, sobre papel blanco, en planchas de 35 ejemplares sin dentar. Cada pliego constaba de siete hileras horizontales de cinco sellos cada una. Su tamaño es de 18,5 por 22mm.
La viñeta de esta primera estampilla nacional está ilustrada con la figura de un sol, tomado del Escudo de Armas del Estado vigente desde 1824 hasta 1906. Esta primera emisión comprendió tres valores a saber: 60 centavos, azul; 80 centavos, verde; y 1 real, bermellòn.
Posteriormente habían sido impresos otros valores de 180 y 240 centavos pero no circularon (no fueron empleadas con franqueo) pues su viñeta indicaba la leyenda "Diligencia" que era incompatible con el transporte fluvial que se empleaba para conducir la correspondencia entre las capitales de ambas orillas del Río de la Plata.
Pese a la sencillez de su diseño y de carecerse, en dicha época, de modernos medios de impresión, las "Diligencias" son estampillas de singular belleza y despiertan el interés de los grandes coleccionistas del mundo. Las "Diligencias" figuran entre los sellos postales más apreciados de la filatelia mundial.
