"Isla de Flores" (Island of Flowers) is located at the heart of the "Río de la Plata", facing the departments of Canelones and Montevideo.

The island is divided in three areas united by shoals and embankments, high tides separate the areas and makes them look like independent territories. The first part is the higher one, known as "Isla Grande" (Big Island) and contains most of the buildings: the ruins of a command headquarters, a clean isolation hospital for healthy travelers; a hospital and a hotel where officers and distinguished visitors lodged and also a lighthouse and a disembarkation dock. In the second island one can find the dirty isolation hospital, where patients with infectious disease were located and a cemetery. In the third and smallest island of the three were located the chapel and a crematory.

The flora and fauna of the island portray clearly the ecosystem of Montevideo's ancient shore, which disappeared due to anthropic activity. Currently 31 species of birds live there, the following are portrayed in the stamp: the Kelp Gull (Larus Dominicanus), the Snowy Egret (Egrtta Thula) and the American Oyster-catcher (Haematopus Palliatus).

The National Park of "Isla de Flores", and its incredible bird life, biologic diversity, history and heritage is part of the National System of Natural Protected Areas.

La Isla de Flores está situada en el corazón del Río de la Plata, frente a los departamentos de Canelones y Montevideo. 

La Isla de Flores está dividida en tres áreas unidas por restingas y terraplenes que con la pleamar se separan y dan la sensación de ser territorios independientes entre sí. La primera es la más alta, conocida como Isla Grande y concentra la mayoría de las edificaciones: las ruinas de una comandancia, un lazareto limpio para la atención de viajeros sanos; un hospital y un hotel donde se alojaban los oficiales y los visitantes ilustres; así como el faro y un muelle de desembarco. También había un edificio de desinfección para lavar ropa contaminada, cuyas calderas de hierro aún posan como monumentos estrafalarios. En la denominada segunda Isla está el lazareto sucio, donde se internaba pacientes con enfermedades infecciosas, y el cementerio. En la tercera y más pequeña de las islas se encuentra la capilla y un crematorio. 

La Isla tiene una flora y una fauna que representa fielmente el ecosistema de la antigua costa de Montevideo, que fue desapareciendo por la actividad antrópica. Allí viven 31 especies de aves, de las cuales se encuentran representadas en el sello: la Gaviota Cocinera (Larus Dominicanus), Garcita Blanca Chica (Egrtta Thula), Ostrero Común(Haematopus Palliatus).

El Parque Nacional de Isla de Flores, con su increíble avifauna, su diversidad biológica, su historia y su patrimonio edilicio, ha ingresado al Sistema Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas.
